Show Notes

Welcome to the 90th Episode of Find Your People! It is as wild and wonderful as the rest of them. We are changing things up a little. Instead of just a food segment, we are doing books or food. We have gone through our entire family cookbook of recipes and new things that we are loving. And don’t worry, if we find something new and amazing, we will share it with you! We had plenty of baseball sadness and disappointment to talk about this week. And Mandee has lots of questions, but are there answers? Tune in to find out!

Mandy. How's that okay, Dee? How are you today? This is lovely. Are you putting lotion on? Are you following the tips that I gave last week? I won't say I looked up the sponge luthus thing. Yes. I didn't pull the trigger on it yet. I'm trying not to spend any money. I still haven't got my hospital bill. I'm just waiting for that joy to land on my head. I haven't gone to Italy before I got my hospital bill. I'm sorry. I can't spend any money on anything. I have to eat and that's it. Maybe some toilet paper. I did it. I don't know how often you all buy tissues. Generally, and I have a box of tissues on every surface of my house. I have a box by my bed. I have a box on my desk. I have tissues everywhere. Even still, I generally only had to like, re-up on the tissues. You know, you buy a four pack and I would generally re-up on the tissues. Maybe once a week. I have placed my third order of tissues since March. Girl. Third. There has been some nose blow in around here. Y'all should have seen the number of tissues I took with me to Italy. Back out, I was not going to run out of tissues. I just can't believe after everything that you went through. I'm going to run out of tissues. I can't believe after everything that you went through that the need is still there. Here we are. I talked to my best friend from law school yesterday. She's the one I may have talked to you about the death nose. Did we talk about death nose? No, I don't think so. I think she had sinus surgery. 15 years ago. Because the way she described it was the inside of her nose smelled like death. That's why she went to the ENT. I did not have that sensation before surgery. I had it after surgery when I had that sinus infection. I was like, oh, this is death nose. I get it. Now I can smell the inside of my nose. There are times. I can smell the inside of my nose because that's not my nose. Anyway, I was talking to her yesterday. As soon as I started talking, she was waiting for me. I was like, oh, I'm sick. That's like, yeah, dog. I'm not sick, but yeah, I'm still stepping. Drippy. Yeah. Yay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I got the allergies. We'll talk to this Katie about who I'm having. Um, so I'm starting to get a new routine. Um, over the whole anxiety of, I need to be doing a paper when I don't really have any more papers. Um, so I'm kind of selling into a new routine of things and work and all that, which is nice. Um, I find, you know, because I work on Sundays, I try to take Friday off. Um, and I know that's different than the rest of the world, but I'm trying to hold Fridays, uh, and Saturdays. Sacred and that's hard sometimes. People are generally understanding, but sometimes they're like, but I, you know, but, and I'm like, no, I just. Two days for a weekend off. I deserve two days for a weekend off. So, um, they just, it's more than people just forget. It's not that people are trying to be difficult, but, um, when you work for yourself, too, it's easy to sort of call the time and say, yeah, it's good. It's a good practice to have. They sort of hard boundaries that you think. Yes. And, you know, a lot of times with lawyer work, too, I'm sure pastoral work is a 24, seven job. I can't turn it off if there's an emergency or a death or an illness. You know, it doesn't matter. Pastoral care happens 24, seven, but other stuff, like I'm going to have to hard pass on on Friday. So I'm working hard to set those boundaries and expectations to give myself some peace. And speaking of that next week, and I'm, you may need now, we'll talk about whether we can get the podcast on next week. I'll be in the mountains. Um, they do have Wi-Fi. How good it is, but I will be up in North Carolina with my friend, his daughter just graduated from high school. So she's an empty nester. And I am done with all the things. And so we're going to take a few days off of the mountains, which is going to be really. Yeah. So I'm excited about that. Um, and then the other thing is Auburn is out of the, you know, of the baseball world series, college world series. I'm real sad about it. I did see that. So they play every year in Omaha. And there's a bar in Omaha that keeps up with how many Jello shots they sell to each team. And LSU, not surprisingly, when they're there, always wins. And so the guy that owns the bar got super excited that LSU was coming this year because he knows he's going to make plenty. Oh, cash. So it's a good team. It'll be a good, a good one, but, um, Auburn just will not be there. I've decided I'm written for Murray State. Yeah, me too. They are the Cinderella team. They play an A stadium that seats 800 people. Love it. They know their own grass like the coach moves the grass. The team has to tarp the field. Yep. Like that. You are not one of these gigantic powerhouses. Um, so I've decided they, they're going to be my team. And I can't remember what regional they may have been in the same regional as Mississippi state. Or did they win the old miss? Or me or anyway, for some reason, Mississippi state has decided they are adopting Murray State. And so I saw it like boom, I'm. Yeah, Sophie. She's already ordered a Murray State t-shirt. Love it. She posted. And then they have already decided they are going to call the bar that does the Jello shots. And just bad Jello shots in honor of Murray State. Love it. Love it. Yeah, I think I love a Cinderella story. So I'm that's who I had my own as well. So I'm hopeful that they can make it pretty far in at least because that'll be fun to watch. So I'm loving it. And we hate Louisville. Yeah. We should not read it all for Louisville. No. They're the ones that won the regional. Yes. I can still Carolina. Yes. I'm okay with because you know that Florida coach was so rude to him and they handled it with Grace. So I'd be okay with coastal Carolina winning even though they beat Auburn. LSU would be another SEC team that would be okay with me. But I think Murray State. I'm with you. I think they're going to be my team. I do like Arkansas because they. Yeah. You pay to get in and they got it up with you T. Shenanigans. It's it was a little bit of. Part of me is like, yeah, of course they acted like they acted because they are you know in the face of UT. What is your choice? Yeah. Although. Vandy. Vandy took the UT series and still behave like Vandy boys. But that I mean you taste just. Car. So I don't know. I didn't hate that Arkansas was clapping back at UT. Yeah. In that series. Yeah. But that's about it for me. Honey and I are just chilling and. You know, next week you'll get a kick out of this next week as balloon camp here at the campground. And I was hopeful. I was very hopeful that I would get some balloon animals out of the whole deal. But it's not that kind of balloon camp. It is a hot air balloon thing that is happening in. Well, I'm. And that's so it's not happening here. They're too many trees. But they'll be launching up in Perry, but they'll be staying down here. So. Okay. How. Katie gets. They had a hot air balloon accident and fits your own several years ago. When we still in the farm because we were afraid of it. They like there was a moment where we were afraid that the balloon had gone down on the farm. On the farm. Yeah. It was next. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I will not be getting in the hot air balloons. But I will. I'm sure be interacting quite nicely with the people of the hot air balloons. So. There we go. Well, that's about it for me. Tell us about your week. I see there's more baseball to talk about in the most hard pain. It is pain. It is. Why do we want to baseball? My lord. Braves. Yeah. How do you run it? I keep it like they lost a one run game. Then they were playing a day game and they were out like six runs. Lost that game. Blue it in the ninth inning. Lost that game by one run. flew to San Francisco. And then I am not positive. But I think they lost every single one of those games by one run. Lost that series got swept like two series in a row. I mean. What does that mean? I know. And like you pointed out last week, it's not like they don't have talent. Right. That's what's so hard. Yeah. And then, you know, like. AJ Smith, Sharver, who had won the fifth starting position. He had a great record. He was the first one to win the first time he was in the sixth inning. And then he got hit by a pitch on the ankle. And then all of his elbow popped. Oh. So he had to have Tommy John surgery. Whoops. So he had been Bryce Elder. He was in the sixth inning. So he had been Bryce Elder. He did so well for us two years ago. And then just has stunk it up. Bryce Elder had been up for until Spencer Strider got back from the injured list. So when Spencer got back, Bryce Elder went back down to triple A. Well, after AJ Smith's show, he got. He had to have Tommy John. Then Bryce Elder came back and Bryce pitched a hell of a game. He was a one run game. He went out in the eighth inning. You know, he finished the eighth inning. He had like the career has struck out. So he pitched a great game. We were ahead about one run. We lost the game. So. So for us, right? Just like even with. When we get people up and they do like our pitching is our starting pitching bullpen's shit. But the starting pitching has been so good. And we just can't. Can't help them at all. We can't. Yeah. Yeah. I think we have one two games in the last week, not in a row, not in a row. Don't, don't ask us to win two games in a row. Forget it. It's painful. It's just painful. It's painful. And then yeah, watching the college. Basically, I was reading against people. Right. Not reading anybody reading against people. So I was reading. It was really good. Hey, and it's. I think it's you, and it gets glue. But yeah, so I mean just painful just painful. But that's it. Otherwise, yeah, we're just here. I have a question. Yeah. Where are the eggs? So I heard on the day of the night that there was a salmonella outbreak from one of the largest producers. Took a lot of them off the shelf. I'm not lying to you that I got I was on Whole Foods last night working on a grocery order And the only eggs they had available were like the $10 eggs So I thought well wait till in the morning because sometimes I restock at night and they'll have to Girl there ain't an egg there is not an egg not an egg not one egg Available from the desks and Whole Foods So I will say one of the perks of being in the country is that I have an egg producer Before you can make a map on the beach Not an egg I mean if they're not people they can gather the eggs Because they have been arrested maybe or Have all the tradwives Come to the beach and they're trying to get their protein and they have bought all the eggs from the Whole Foods Excuse me ma'am. No ma'am. That's not for you. Thank you We still have a foster dog. What is where the eggs? Yeah, I don't know Where are they? We'll have to get and we'll have to get a Walmart and get some eggs Walmart pickup has become my name everything Isn't it great It is But I don't know I haven't tried to buy eggs because I do have a I feel like it's like a drug dealer because they're so precious, but I have an egg dealer Then I get eggs from oh I know right Look we don't have other things down here There's a lot of things we don't have So yeah, it's a trade on We got the bag The other this is just me ranting Can we talk about people? Specifically Let's talk about my property management company Her name is Ann. Yeah with an e She's from Saint Louis. Okay. She's probably 10 further than me My she's probably well probably she's probably six years She is not the sharpest tool in the shed. Oh And the amount of frustration that I experience in trying to communicate with Ann with an e Is off the charts Yeah off the charts. I think I told you last time my whole internet debacle That I had to act like a lawyer For them to finally like get a fix which they did so that's and that's the that's the dance I'd say with Ann is that I have to be ugly to her But then she kind of comes through once I'm ugly and so it's frustrating. Yeah, I'm not ugly Just have to get firm. Yeah, which you know as a woman we see as I think Anyway, so I have a little store dream downstairs That I've had for probably Seven or eight years at this point. I'm the only person in this building and any of these buildings who lives here full time Let's just put that out here. Yeah So uh, I and I'm the one that figured out that that room could be turned into a store dream It was just sitting in to and I said what do we do with this room? Can we not turn it into a store room? We did and the head of the the president of HOA at that point then Quote and quote won the lottery for the store dream. I bet you did bill shock her boom, but when they sold When they sold their unit They did they they gifted me the storage unit. Oh, nice It wouldn't even exist if it weren't for me Whatever so for like the first Five years I paid $300 a year for the room love that thank you All this year they came in and decided that it was gonna be a thousand dollars And I needed and I needed to sign a lease And prove that I had insurance Now listen, I'm a lawyer. I get it. Whatever fine So I thought well, let me look so I started looking because at this point Yeah, it's got my Christmas decorations in it. It's got some file Like work files in it. Yeah, when I don't have a dog I put my dog stuff in there, you know So how I let me save what a storage unit would cost nearby and I couldn't get one for less than a thousand dollars a year So I thought okay, we'll find it's convenient right now So keep it. I'll pay a thousand dollars. I'll stay bit up So I did well this year They said the rent was going up to $1300 So Somebody wants that storage unit is what's happening. Yep. I was about to say who wants it I suspect that's the president of the HOA shocker who lived in Sydney Um, and it's also a lawyer. So anyway, I was like uh really $1300 and I'm like And I said to Ian I suspect what's happening is somebody on the board wants this um storage room So this is really yeah, and it's unfortunate. Shaking down That's called a shakedown Mandy All right, so I said um Will you at least ask the board if they will find a multi-year lease To like lock this price in yeah for three years Because it's ridiculous How the rent has gone up in the past two years. Yeah And she came back and she said now they only want to do a year lease But at that point I was like just past surgery Yeah, like it was just too much to deal with me You know, so I said fine. I'll take it. Anyway, so I get the lease So I tell Ian yes, I'll I'll I'm gonna take it um Please send me the lease the you know the updated lease agreement to sign And she said okay, well then I get a late notice On the HOA days Which we also went through last year because she said you can pay it into two installments if you want to say great So I'll pay the first installment and I said I'll pay the second installment at the end of the year Well, then I started getting late notices that it went paid See why I get frustrated with them yep So I get late notice and I'm like, Ian. I don't know what why we're getting a late notice on our HOA days They've been automatically grabbed out of the same account for 10 years It's she's like They're billing the storage unit wrong I said why are they billing it at all and I haven't seen a lease agreement and also I already told you after the screw up from last year. I want to write a single check to you So where do I need to send the check? And you know she said she would fix the fix the uh Late notice thing and I was like and what's the status on like here's the sign so she's sending soundlaces And I'm sending it back saying where do I send the check and what's the status on the late fees And she replies back and says I'm still waiting on the to hear back on the late fees Okay, well And this is what my original point was and then I just got sad track with my annoyance with Ian But the real annoyance is if somebody asks you two questions Could you answer both questions? Why do you only answer the one question? What really solidified my friendship with birch barter When she was birch round tree Is the fact that you could send her an email with 15 questions in it and ladies and gentlemen when I tell you that she would answer everyone I knew she was my people. Yes My own sister you will see if you send her two texts Forget about ever getting a response to the first one The woman does not scroll up She only answers the most immediate text and her friend asked her about it in Italy. I said now I'm gonna need you to read all your texts. Yeah, you're just like what's my 80? It's my 80 HD. I was like no, that's a choice The choice now just Roll up so I'm saying That's all I love it I'm just drinking drinking my menopause smoothie You see it's in my teeth. I love it Hang in our eggs Humanities 98% Uh Maybe he's going through it y'all Literally I hate it here. God I Let's say you would have started to do you know because sometimes I feel like Well, I said I was gonna do that. I didn't really do it You know, I read an earth world war to fiction aimed at middle schoolers When I was a middle schooler That the whole Anne Frank thing Just really Lies hit on my heart and so when people you know share that mean about you know Anything referencing Anne Frank and these of the art times I feel real cold And so In 2016 one of the things that we were encouraged to do Was you know to just speak our truth Even to people who don't agree because otherwise they're not going here right the truth You know, we're in our silos and so if we're not Speaking our truth the people in the other silos never hear it And that goes both ways right? Because listen I dang sure in the box news that I happen and makes my Usher too hot right so unless Talking about their perspective. I'm not gonna hear it. I fully admit that plays both ways So anyway, I've really taken upon myself to talk about things on Facebook and I tried to do it in a very educational Non-confrontational non-argumentative way I tried it and always That was really my aim And then you know inevitably there was always that like two or three people The same two or three people and they're you know two or three people who never come in on anything else I ever post on Facebook right but by gosh the me I say anything civically minded They can come in and argue And then you know what it didn't make a bit of difference Didn't make one bit of difference So I'm not doing it anymore has been my Has been my take and then I saw one too many in print me and so I just It wasn't even An encouragement. It wasn't a take it was a fact. Yeah, it was a fact And I posted it on Facebook and guess what y'all it was the same two or three people here to come And I thought you know what I'm gonna do is not respond at all Don't give them anymore airtime It was so fun. I managed to do it for approximately 12 hours and it was really fun while I did it I definitely I didn't finally have to go and then respond to one person because she's not one of those like Yeah, three people and she was asking an honest question. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah Which then Encouraged a girl I went to Arby Ra Elementary School to also ask an honest question And when people are asking honest questions, I'm happy to answer them if I know the answer to them It's just those two or three people so I never responded to them, but I didn't respond to that other people. Yeah That gets me all agitated too. I just need it So I'll agitate and agitate it agitate Just answer the questions ask Oh man On the All of them are Anna spreadsheet Katie save us from the rant But I see that only agenda So Mandy and I don't know if you over the last few episodes if you've been Pag closes to dinner having a hard time coming up with food Because we eat the same things over and over again both of us. I mean if there is new food that we find that we like We're gonna absolutely let y'all know about it if there's a new recipe or something going on we will do it But um I had the thought the other night because I thought Lord if I got to come up with another food I'm out of recipes and the family cookbook. I'm out of everything. I'm out of ideas. I'm still eating cottage cheese and chicken so um I thought because we both read so much that maybe we could separate out the books we're enjoying or the food when we come across something And different that we like So this week I'm gonna talk about the books and I've got several just because we haven't done this in a while um That I have read um and uh some honest opinions I'm just gonna say So the first one I read is James by Percival Everett and I was heavy read this one I was very very it just won the Pulitzer. I was very excited about it I'm not in there. People can see you're not in there. I'm sorry. She's not in there. Okay I don't know how you felt about it, Mandy. It is not my favorite book I've ever read I think it's an important book for people to read because it it's a different perspective But it's not even my favorite retelling Of an old story. I think the premise is interesting I just think it wanders way too much and I know that's kind of the whole point but I don't know it was It's worth reading. I'm not saying it's not worth reading But it was not my favorite is my favorite Percival Everett book I kind of chalked it up to The source material it was working with. Yes as opposed to Yeah, you know, yeah Like I think it had to follow yeah um the original yeah So yeah, no I've listened to it and I thought if I have to hear about this stupid Shakespearean actor dude one more time. Like I'm done with him. Yeah. Yeah Yeah, but no I I did not like it right, but yeah, I can see what But I didn't love it But it's an important book. I think the concept is very important My favorite retelling and I think we've talked about it on here was the one about um The whale maybe dick from the women's perspective. That's been my favorite retelling that I've read um And I love a retelling Anyway, it was it's important. I think important material to think about and digest But I'm not sure it's the first Percival Everett out there The the the concept of a retelling too is sort of the Going back to my Facebook those the girl that I was talking about that I did engage with because she's not one of those two people right um She didn't have having to give conversation in her you know, she said I you know what This has encouraged me to go and learn some more things. Yeah, and Yeah, so if you know what that's exactly what needs to happen is we need to listen to each other And understand each other's perspective and also acknowledge that there's a lot of gray Between the two extremes and in the gray is where most of us live. Yep. So yeah, I think the retelling Is important because it it's a good practice for all of us to be listening to somebody else's Yep, and to see things from different angles. It's a very different Angle to see that story and even that character um That I bet none of us ever thought about right so Um, it never even crossed our minds. So that part is very very important. I think so I would definitely suggest that people read it Um, so then I kind of switched To light summer readings Because I've read a lot of heavy stuff over the last three years and so I'm very excited um the new Emily Henry Great big beautiful life If you like Emily Henry, you're gonna love it. It is so so good. I devoured it It um, I mean you can see the outcome coming them all away however It's so good um, it is so well written Thoughtful but in a light fun summer way. So I highly recommend great big beautiful Wi-Fi and Emily Henry Um when I was up at my Good beatry. Yes a great beatry great beatry and so is this next one so Go come bring it when you come down here to bow my eggs. Yes to the wet sock So the other one that I'm reading was a recommendation by my local book seller Margaret at Bears books and make it I went in she had gotten some books for me and um I was looking around she had some great displays and stuff And she suggested and I like Mary Kay Andrews, but it gets kind of repetitive after a while To me hers do more than others But last summers Mary Kay Andrews called summers at the saint I'm halfway through it. It's really really good. So I was surprised how good it was um and Say Margaret did not steer me wrong. It's um different than a lot of hers have been So I suggest that you read it's a good summer. I've never read I've never read any of her stuff. I do love her Instagram account Yes It's but I've actually never read it's really good. It's very formulaic just like every other beatry out there right like Girl does this meets a boy falls in love Yeah, she writes a book a year. She has to be kind of formulaic. Yeah But this was a little bit different than the rest of them. So I've I've really enjoyed it, but summers at the saint So thank you Margaret Bears books ask your book seller They'll give you some gyms Especially if there is cool as mine I Can't I can't get a my local bookstore right now because this is seaside and I can't yeah. Oh, yeah. No, no, I bet I bet I bet and there's a good so here's where it's gonna get dangerous next week There's a bookstore in the mountains that has a brunch spot in it. I know I'm in it My friend Jennifer that I'm going with was like you can't let me leave with any books. I was like because I'm gonna leave with all of them Good so there's awesome. Yeah, so those are my books that I have read or am reading that and my honest opinion on them Hot take on the Pulitzer prize winner but Um, they need to tell us about you What now You know what did bring me joy what I don't see Pulitzer prize winner I don't think it's a surprise but uh The Hamilton reunion on the time. Oh my gosh I knew there was something I was forgetting it was so good Did you get the reference to the White House in the background at the end and they were all wearing black except um For the king. I mean it was just so good So kind of a subtle table flip It was amazing. So I cried, lendman well cried Aldra was robbed. I'm just gonna Throw that out there too. So oh Can you imagine sitting in the theater and seeing that Aldra Performance no no no No, can't believe it. I know. Oh, that was when uh We played Nicole the pussy cat doll and When she performed at the When at the Tony's I was like, well, thanks. She was really good. I wish her mic What was wrong with the microphones? I was like I really wish they would get the microphones fixed because that was a lovely performance That probably would have been even better for mic Yeah I expect better if they had her people um, yeah, I was real proud of myself that I did not start crying Until Devy digs uh with that beret on and did you see that point? Yeah So when hercules Mulligan came out and he was like and I'm loving it and you can tell he was kind of breaking character Like he loved being in that moment. That's what he was really singing. I was like done And can we talk about the tea of We noticed the eighth in e-ramos. Yes With not shown at all and like nobody was posted even with any of his pictures And I was like mm-hmm everybody changed jasmine because you know for those of you who are not hamil fans Uh the peggy and peggy sister jasmine seepus jones um and an Anthony ramos who was uh Philip and um Oh, who was he in the first half um um Who's the other buddy I can't think of his name yeah um Anyway, he uh He they fell in love while they were doing he will turn and they got engaged and then The word is that he cheated on her and they broke up So he was not but then it then it came around that supposedly he had scheduling conflicts And so he couldn't be at any of the rehearsals So he just came in Slid in Sunday afternoon After everybody was like already dressed and said video act I would fit I fell back into that So hard yep 10 years ago. I mean every single person's name like I mean sasa sasha head From making yes was up there two making girls on the stage at the tonys what the heck Jim chrisp is a rock star He raised some people So I was just I feel right back into that rabbit hole where I lived 10 years ago. It was awesome. Yeah, I love Oh the foster dogs getting in trouble Um, so tell us about your favorites, Mandy. You've got some good ones. I can't wait to go look at all of these things Her feelings are so hard that I just yelled at her like oh Okay, first up is Jamie golden on Instagram Her handle is Jamie J.A.M. at e b As a boy golden She is a freaking Riot is what I'm here to tell you she lives in Birmingham she has a Podcast I've tried to listen to it before and I like maybe listen to one episode and then just never I think it's called the pop cast um She is good friends with safety Hudson uh, boomama That's how I found her um But she is just She's a springing. She's a riot um and I've been made into suggests for her several weeks now, but I finally uh Remember to this week because last week she was doing her Uh Going through all of her skincare entities um, love that she does it like once every six months or something and say she gives you the good info on the skin care and the makeup and Um, look at you get it. Otherwise, but you're excited about skin care Um, but she's just generally a delight and hysterical. I'm just following. I'm excited She's recovering uh even jellicle um And uh talks about that a good bit and then I think her only job is this podcast. I think it's very popular um Anyway, she's just she's a hoot. She's a hoot. Love it. So follow Jamie be golden um on the gram. You will be entertained. I promise um The next thing is I took this to Italy and it's just like I wear it a lot It's from our favorite shop down here. Bacasa And it's a maxi skirt Um, and it's on sale right now too.
